Product Description

Whenever a conversation turns to the subject of living out in the countryside, all sorts of images are inevitably conjured up before our mind’s eye, shaped as much by our own experiences as by depictions in the media. Rural life evokes a sense of village community, of a countryside idyll, but also of crushingly dull provincial life. For some it holds the promise of an alternative lifestyle; for others, the threat posed by exodus and the disintegration of infrastructure. The publication Über Leben am Land analyses rural life in Europe and the United States and showcases the sheer diversity of background experiences and points of view that constitute our idea of the countryside. Twenty artists approach the different faces and facets of provincial life in ways that are documentary-based, staged and at times highly personal. Text contributions by Verena Kaspar-Eisert, Elke Rauth and Peter Zawrel deal in depth with the multi-layered visual worlds of the countryside and provide an inventory of urban-rural relationships.
